Another stellar effort for Jordan Papirny Wednesday, making 49 saves. |
The Brandon Wheat Kings kept their 2014 post-season hopes alive with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday night.
Jens Meilleur’s shorthanded goal 6:32 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and stood up as the game-winning goal while Jordan Papirny made 49 saves in the Wheat Kings’ net.
“I picked off that pass and went down on the rush. I knew (Edmonton goaltender Tristan) Jarry was going to be cheating a bit because he’s been doing it all series,” said Meilleur on CKLQ’s post-game show, “ I looked off Robo (linemate Chad Robinson) and put it on net and I think it went off Corbett’s stick. Any goal is a good goal.”
Richard Nejezchleb had two goals and an assist to spark the Wheat Kings offensively while Tim McGauley and John Quenneville also scored for Brandon.
However, it was Papirny who was the top star for the Wheat Kings on this night, pushing his series total to 181 saves (on 196 shots) in four games for a .928 save percentage.
“Paps is a great guys on and off the ice. He puts everything into making himself better and, as you see, it’s paying off,” said Meilleur, “He’s great for us, and he gives us a chance to win every single night.”

Cody Corbett and Luke Bertolucci scored the goals for Edmonton while Jarry finished with 26 saves in the Oil Kings’ goal.
Brandon still trails the Eastern Conference semifinal series three games to one, with Game Five at Rexall Place in Edmonton on Friday night (7:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
Chaff...attendance Wednesday was 3,246...Brandon was 1-for-4 on the power-play, with Nejezchleb’s empty-net goal the lone marker with the man advantage...the Wheat Kings were 4-for-4 on the penalty-kill...tough night for Oil Kings’ F Henrik Samuelsson, who was held pointless and finished the night minus-four.
