The Brandon Wheat Kings will look to rebound Saturday when they visit the Edmonton Oil Kings in Game Two of their Eastern Conference semifinal.
The Wheat Kings dropped the opener of the Best-of-Seven series 5-0 on Thursday night, but had an off-day Friday to practice, re-focus and regroup.
“We can’t dwell on one game,” said Brandon captain Ryan Pulock after Brandon’s workout Friday in Edmonton, “We have to go back to it, see what we did wrong, change that; see what we did good and build off that and come ready to play (Saturday).”
Thursday’s defeat was Brandon’s first loss of the 2014 post-season, and also the first time in a while the club had some trouble creating scoring opportunities.
Part of that can be attributed to the club’s inability to put shots on goal when they had shooting lanes, part is due to Edmonton’s stout defensive game and part is the Oil Kings’ ability to block shots.
“Obviously, they have a good defensive team so the scoring chances are going to be down. When we have those chances, we have to take advantage of them and (Thursday), we didn’t do that. We had our chances and couldn’t bury it,” said Pulock, “But, it’s a long series – that’s game one and we have to get ready for Game Two.”
They aren’t likely to be any lineup changes for the Wheat Kings in Game Two on Saturday, with goaltender Curtis Honey (upper body) the only player missing from practice on Friday.
Prospect Logan Thompson is expected to act as Jordan Papirny’s backup again in Game Two.
Chaff...the Telus Cup Western Regionals began on Thursday, with the Saskatchewan champion Notre Dame Argos doubling the Manitoba Champion Winnipeg Wild 4-2 and the host Prince Albert Mintos edging the Thunder Bay Kings 3-2. Wheat Kings’ prospect Mark Taraschuk had one of the goals for the Wild in their loss...Wheat Kings’ prospect Joey Anderson announced via twitter Thursday that he’ll be playing for the U.S. National team Development Program next season. Anderson, who has already committed to attend Minnesota-Duluth, was a ninth round pick of Brandon in the 2013 Bantam Draft
