Nejezchleb Breaks Out of Mini-Slump

Richard Nejezchleb
Brandon import Richard Nejezchleb appears to have broken out of a mini-scoring slump this week.

Nejezchleb had two goals and three points in the last two games, breaking a four-game pointless and six-game goalless streak for the Wheat Kings' top goal-scorer this season.

"It was actually nice to score against Medicine Hat (on Wednesday)," said Nejezchleb after Brandon's practice on Saturday, "I tried to not think about it and help team in other ways.  Good defensive play, try to make simple plays and it worked out for me."

Nejezchleb has a team-high 27 goals and 44 points in 51 games this season but hadn't experienced a similar slump to the one he broke out of Wednesday through the first 2/3's of the season.

"I think I had lots of chances," added Nejezchleb, "I play with good players, they always find me and I just wasn't able to put the puck in the net."

The Wheat Kings are hoping the re-emergence of Nejezchleb continues on Sunday, when they club opens a three-game road trip in Swift Current.

Brandon is coming off an 8-1 home-ice victory over the Broncos on Friday night, bringing back memories of another situation where they played a team back-to-back and beat them handily the first time out.

"After Christmas break, we beat Regina 8-0 and then we went into their barn and got beat up badly (8-4)," said Nejezchleb, "We have set our mind that it's not going  to be easy.  We have to take it like a playoff game and just start from begining, play simply, get pucks deep and find a way to win."

The Wheat Kings will also visit Medicine Hat on Tuesday and Lethbridge on Wednesday as part of their three-game road trip.

Chaff...The WHL fined Swift Current $500 and suspended Broncos' D Bobby Zinkan for three games and Swift Current F Dakota Odgers for one game for the third period incident Friday in Brandon.  Zinkan and Odgers both came off the bench and were involved in a scrum on the ice, with Zinkan fighting Brandon F Jesse Gabrielle...Broncos beat Moose Jaw 6-3 Saturday to pull back into a tie with Brandon for first-place in the WHL's East Division.
