Hawryluk Headed to Hockey Canada U18 Camp

  Brandon Wheat Kings' forward Jayce Hawryluk is headed to Hockey Canada's Under-18 Selection Camp later this week in Toronto.

  The Roblin product and Wawanesa's Jordan Thomson were the only Manitobans invited to teh camp, which will help determine the 22-player roster for next month's Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

  "To be one of the top 42 players in the country, it's a honour to be selected into that group of guys and to make the team would be an even bigger honour," said Hawryluk earlier this week, "Just just have to leave it all out there.  It's a quick camp and you have to give 100 per cent every game and every practice, play your game out there and hopefully make the squad."

  Hawryluk had 18 goals and 43 points in 61 games in being named the Wheat Kings' Rookie of the Year last season and was recently one of 14 WHL players named in the NHL Central Scouting Service's 2013-14 Futures List of North American players eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.

  "I learned a lot my irst year in the league and I've definitely grown a lot from that and matured a lot from that," added Hawryluk, "Now, I'm just trying to come in, be a leader on the team and, hopefully, lead our team into the playoffs this year."

  Thomson, meanwhile, notched 14 points in 47 games with the Kamloops Blazers in his rookie WHL season.

  The 5-foot-11, 175 pound Thomson is hoping the Toronto camp is the next step in his international hockey career.

  "It's all stepping stones.  I started out playing Under-16 for Team Manitoba and then Under-17 with Team West and, now, this is my chance to put on the actual Maple Leaf for Canada.  It makes me smile, really, it's a great feeling," said Thomson this week, "Just to share it with my friends and family, they're all so proud of me and it just feels great."

  Canada's roster for next month's tournament is expected to be named next Monday.

  Canada was won gold at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament the last five years.

Chaff...The Wheat Kings' top three picks in the 2013 Bantam Draft are also headed to Ontario in the near future.  Nolan Patrick, Kale Clague and Tanner Kaspick were all invited to the Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp. It will be held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario from August 6-10...2012 first round pick Braylon Shmyr and 2012 second round pick Tanner Browne are attending Team Pacific's Summer Camp in Calgary this week.
