Gylywoychuk Out, McCrimmon Back In as Wheat Kings' Head Coach

 Kelly McCrimmon is stepping back behind the bench for the Brandon Wheat Kings next season.

  The club announced Wednesday that they've relieved Dwayne Gylywoychuk of his head coaching duties and that McCrimmom will be stepping back behind the bench for the 2013-2014 campaign.

  The club also announced Wednesday that David Anning and Darren Ritchie will be returning to the team as assistant coaches next season.

  "As a general manager, I just felt it was change that was necessary.  That's, I guess, where my final decision ended up at and, as a result, that's why the decision was made," said McCrimmon, "I feel that, at this time, working with David and Darren that it'll be the right coaching staff to take these guys forward."

  Gylywoychuk spent just one season as the team's bench boss, compiling a 24-40-4-4 record last season as the Wheat Kings missed the playoffs for the first time in 13 years.

  He had previously spent nine seasons as an assistant coach with Brandon and he was offered another position within the organization but declined and will be pursuing other coaching opportunities.

  McCrimmon, meanwhile, posted a 294-165-49 record, a .627 winning percentage, in seven-plus seasons behind the Wheat Kings' bench from 2004 to 2011.

  "Although it's another change, there'll be some familiarity for some of the players that have played for me before," said McCrimmon, "Certainly, not coming outside the organization, I've got a pretty good handle on where we're at with our returning team and on our incoming rookies."

  Among the current Wheat Kings that played under McCrimmon as a coach is current Brandon captain Ryan Pulock, who was a rookie with Brandon during the 2010-2011 season.

  "I guess there's a bit of mixed feeling there.  Kelly was a great coach my first year and I think he's going to do a great job again and I look forward to that," said Pulock, "It's definitely tough seeing someone like (Gylywoychuk) go, he's been around here so long...we have a pretty good relationship there and it's tough to see him go but I wish him all the best."

  McCrimmon's coaching style will likely be a little sterner than Gylywoychuk's but Pulock feels that might be just what the team needs.

  "I think with young guys, that approach will help and keep guys on track," added Pulock, "Having a young team and being his first year as a head coach, it was definitely a tough situation for Dwayne to be in, but it's a business and I think he's still got a bright future in his career."

  The coaching change is Brandon's third in three years.

  Cory Clouston was the Wheat Kings' head coach in 2011-2012 with Gylywoychuk manning the ship in 2012-2013.
