Ex Wheat King Wiebe Headed to Switzerland

Shayne Wiebe
It's a new chapter for former Brandon Wheat Kings' captain Shayne Wiebe.

The Brandon product has signed a one-year deal with Olten in Switzerland, with an option for a second year.

Wiebe is a guest instructor at this week's Wheat Kings' Hockey School and talked about the opportunity to head overseas.

"I told my agent that I was interested in the opportunity to go over to Europe and I guess, last minute, they had some things happen with their two imports and that opened the opportunity for me," said Wiebe, "I couldn't be more excited to go there.  It's one the best places to play."

Wiebe split last season between the AHL's Connecticut Whale and the ECHL's Greenville Road Warriors, scoring a combined eight goals and 15 points in 37 games.

It was the second straight year Wiebe had spent playing on at least two separate teams, so the stability of playing with one team for an entire season is something he's looking forward to in 2013-2014.

"Whenever you're moving, it's always more stressful," said Wiebe, "It's lot harder to get in a rhythm and be consistent so it's definitely something to look forward to."

Wiebe's departure to Europe isn't for another ten days or so but, in the meantime, he's been gathering some 'intel' from friends and former teammates who have already experienced what it's like to play overseas.

"You don't really know until you get over there but they've given me some good pointers and stuff like that and what to look for and what to watch out for and stuff like that," said Wiebe, "I'm sure the guys over there will be really good too."
