Ryan Olsen and Myles Bell scored wth 37.6 and 8.4 seconds left in the third period respectively, with Bell then netting the winning goal 2:52 into overtime.
"We didn't get the job done, that's what shook down," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "We didn't get the job done when we needed to."
Tyler Coulter's goal 20 seconds into the third period gave Brandon a 4-3 lead and Peter Quenneville's power-play marker with just 2:20 remaining in regulation, his second goal of the night, seemed to be the insurance goal Brandon needed.
Alas, it was not to be for Brandon with the Rockets' late-game heroics.
"I thought we played a solid game all night. We were competing with one of the best teams in the league and it's just too bad we let it slip at the end," said Brandon rookie forward Tyler Coulter, who also had an assist in the contest. "I can't think of many worse than that...that's a tough way to end the game."
It's the second time in less than a month the Wheat Kings have let a team score the tying goal with under 10 seconds remaining in the third period, with the Prince Albert Raiders doing the same in a 5-4 victory in Brandon on November 30th.
"A lot of things in a game happen, and how you respond to those things is always critical," added McCrimmon, "I don't think we had the proper response and, as a result, we had the same thing happen identical as happen against Prince Albert."
Brandon also let a two-goal third period lead slip away in their December 4th game against Regina but rallied for a 5-4 win on a Jayce Hawryluk goal with 29 seconds left in regulation.
Peter Quenneville paced Brandon with two goals and an assist on Friday while Rene Hunter and Colton Waltz scored the other Wheat Kings' goals.
Hunter scored the 'Teddy Bear Goal' 29 seconds into the first period while Waltz's first period marker was his first of the season.
The Wheat Kings (17-14-3-0) still earned a single point Friday and are in sole possession of sixth-place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Brandon concludes their pre-Christmas schedule by hosting the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
Chaff...Friday's announced attendance of 4,218 was Brandon's second-largest crowd of the season...Brandon F's Tim McGauley and Rihards Bukarts both left the game Friday, presumably due to injury...no total was available Friday on the number of stuffed toys collected during Friday's Teddy Bear Toss...fans attending Saturday's home game against Moose Jaw are asked to donate a new unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item for the Westman & Area Christmas Dinner.
