Hectic Summer for Wheat Kings' Roy

Flames' draft pick Eric Roy was helping out at the
Wheat Kings' Hockey School this week
It's been a hectic few weeks for Brandon Wheat Kings' defenceman Eric Roy.

Roy was drafted in the fifth round by the Calgary Flames in this year's NHL draft and attended the Flames' development camp last month.

"I went to the Development Camp with a positive attitude and it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot of things," said Roy at this weeks' Wheat Kings' Hockey School, "It was a lot of hard work to go their but there was some familiar territory with (Michael) Ferland there so he kind of helped me out and showed me the ropes.  I can't wait to go back there."

Roy finished fourth in team scoring with the Wheat Kings last season, notching 17 goals and 39 points in 72 games, but also finished with a minus-32 rating so there's still room for improvement.

He says Flames' Player Development Coach Ron Sutter gave him plenty of insight into what he can do to improve.

"While I was there, he helped me out on the ice and off the ice with what I need to work on this season," said Roy, "I think just get bigger, a lot stronger and stay consistent on the ice and off the ice...work hard in your own end and, basically, work hard all the time."

Another insight Roy received from Sutter is something a lot of younger players don't realize is the importance of taking care of your body off the ice.

"It's really important to take care of your body, it keeps you away from the injuries and the bad stuff," said Roy, "It's like Ronnie said, just work hard and take care of your body."

Roy will head back to the Flames in early September, when he's expected to take part in the club's Rookie Camp ahead of their regular training camp sessions.
