Wheat Kings Fall to .500

  The Brandon Wheat Kings suffered their third loss in four games Monday afternoon, dropping a 5-1 decision in Regina.

  The Pats blew open a 2-1 game by scoring three goals in a 4:05 span early in the third period en route to recording their fourth straight victory.

  “We’ve talked about close games and the things you need to do to participate in close games and I think we’ve gotten away from that,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Just responding when something happens, I just don’t think we’re doing a good enough job of that.”

  The line of Dyson Stevenson, Morgan Klimchuk and Chandler Stephenson combined for four goals and ten points for the Pats, with Stevenson recording his second career WHL hat-trick.

  “You have to have awareness, and it’s not going to fall on one line because you don’t have that ability matchup wise, so guys have to be aware,” said McCrimmon, “We talked about this in Prince Albert when we were playing against Leon Draisaitl, who’s a top player.  There’s going to be good players on other teams, that’s how it works.”

  Jens Meilleur scord the lone goal for Brandon while Curtis Honey stopped 21 shots in the Wheat Kings’ net.

  Dawson McAuley made 27 saves for Regina, who won their fourth straight game to improve to .500 on the season at 5-5-0-0.

  Brandon has produced eight goals offensively in their last four contests but McCrimmon felt his team did enough to create opportunities on Monday.

  “Offensively, we haven’t had results but I think we’ve been better offensively as of late,” said McCrimmon, “We had over 40 shots in both of our last home games, I thought we had lots of time in the zone tonight and I think our cycle game has improved, for sure.”

  The loss leaves Brandon at the .500 mark for the year as well at 5-5-0-0.

  The Wheat Kings return to action Wednesday when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
