Brandon Ends Skid on Miller's OT Winner

  Ryley Miller scored 3:26 into overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night.

  It was just the eighth goal of Miller's five-year Western Hockey League career but second overtime winner.

  Things didn't look promising for the Wheat Kings early as the club trailed 2-0 after the opening period, being outshot 24-11 by Red Deer in the process.

  Richard Nejezchleb's goal 1:12 into the second period sparked the Wheat Kings, who tacked on a power-play goal by Jayce Hawryluk and Jason Swyripa's first goal since September 26th to take a 3-2 lead.

  Matt Dumba tied it for Red Deer in the final minute and then Brandon's Alessio Bertaggia and Red Deer's Wyatt Johnson exchanged third period goals, setting the stage for extra time.

  "It was nice to see us rewarded for an effort where he faced some adversity early on, we stayed the course, we got better, we put our work boots on and we got the job done, and it's nice to do it on home ice," said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ's post-game show, "It's something that we can be happy with, and now we can keep pushing and keep moving forward and get better very day."

  Bertaggia, Nejezchleb and Hawryluk all finished with a goal and two assists each while Corbin Boes stopped 44 shots in the Wheat Kings' net.

  "The overtime goal was great because, I hope, it'll give us a lot of energy over the next few games," said Bertaggia, "Obviously, we have to stick with it, keep working hard in practice and in games and I'm pretty sure it'll be all right."

  Saturday's game was the final one for Bertaggia in a Wheat Kings' uniform for a month.  He's heads overseas Sunday to join Switzerland's junior team in advance of the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship.

Chaff...Hawryluk's power-play goal in the second period ended an 0-for-18 slump for the Wheat Kings...Brandon hadn't scored a second period goal during their entire seven-game losing streak...Nick Buonassisi's assist on Swyripa's goal not only snapped a 12-game pointless streak but also gave him 99 career assists...the 24 shots against in the opening period were a season high for Brandon...Killarney's Reid Gow got his sixth goal of the season in Spokane's 4-3 loss to Moose Jaw Saturday while Brandon product Carson Perreaux scored the opening goal in Prince Albert's 7-0 win in Medicine Hat.
