Boes Helps Wheat Kings Make Their Point

It wasn’t the two points the Brandon Wheat Kings were looking for but it may have been a morale victory for the hockey club on Sunday night.

The Wheat Kings fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Medicine Hat Tigers in what was likely Brandon’s best effort in the last couple of weeks.

“We found a way to find a point on the road,” said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Right now, it doesn’t seem like much but it’s a big point for us considering the situation that we’re in and what we’ve been through.”

Eric Roy scored the game-tying goal with 52.7 seconds left in the third period while Corbin Boes made 34 saves in the Brandon net.

Boes displayed the type of confidence in goal that made him one of the WHL’s better netminders during the last two months of the 2011-2012 season –something that hasn’t been the case often enough so far in 2012-2013.

“There were times on the bench when he made a save or he smothered the puck, you could tell he had a little swagger and a little confidence to him and sometimes that goes a long way for a goalie,” said Gylywoychuk, “Those things are what we need from Corbin and, hopefully, he’ll take a baby step just like everyone else tonight.”

Dylan Busenius scored the only goal for Medicine Hat, a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 16:07 of the second period after back-to-back iffy penalties to Jayce Hawryluk and Ryley Miller of the Wheat Kings.

Marek Langhamer stopped 38 shots in the Tigers’ goal while Hunter Shinkaruk and Curtis Valk scored in the shootout for Medicine Hat.

Alessio Bertaggia scored Brandon’s only shootout goal.

The loss left the Wheat Kings with a 10-16-2-2 record on the season.

Brandon’s next action is Friday when they host the Spokane Chiefs to open a four-game home stand.
