Wheat Kings Blanked by Broncos

help fill out Brandon's lineup this weekend

  Ryon Moser had two goals and an assist to pace the Swift Current Broncos to a 5-0 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

  The Wheat Kings played without six regulars because of injury and illness and it showed, with the team registering just 17 shots on goal in suffering their fifth straight loss and ninth in ten games.

  “We’re short bodies but it’s not time for excuses, it’s not time to feel sorry for ourselves, we just need better efforts,” said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ’s post-game show, “It was discouraging the way the game unravelled.”

  The Wheat Kings got through the first period in a 0-0 tie by the Broncos broke things open with three goals in the second period, with Brandon limited to a handful (at best) of scoring opportunities in the contest.

  “Obviously, it’s a struggle for us to score goals right now; we need to get out of that. There are pressure points in the game that we need to capitalize on,” said Anning, whose team went 0-for-5 on the power-play, “At the end of the day, regardless of whether you’re scoring or not, you need to defend.  I don’t think it’s realistic to come on the road or any game and expect to score six or seven goals to get the job done.  As a 20-man unit, we need to do a better job defending.”

  Levi Bews, with his fifth goal in as many games against the Wheat Kings, Reece Scarlett and Graham Black also scored for the Broncos.

  Curtis Honey stopped 26 shots in the Brandon goal while Landon Bow and Eetu Laurikainen combined for the shutout for Swift Current.

  While the focus may be on Brandon’s inability to score, Anning believes the club’s commitment to playing well in their own zone is also waning.

  “When you start to swing and give up passing lanes and good scoring looks, eventually they’re going to capitalize,” added Anning, “The commitment to defending wasn’t there.”

  The loss dropped Brandon to 10-16-2-1 on the season.

  The Wheat Kings close out their weekend road trip by visiting Medicine Hat on Sunday (6:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
