Chiefs Continue Roll Through East Division

  Mitch Holmberg had two goals and an assist to pace the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-2 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

  It was Spokane's fifth victory in as many games on their road swing through the East Division, during which they've outscored their opposition 29-14.

  Dylan Walchuk added a goal and an assist and Garret Hughson stopped 33 shots as the Chiefs picked up their sixth straight win and 11th in their last 13 games.

  John Quenneville, with the Teddy Bear goal, and Jayce Hawryluk scored the goals for Brandon while Corbin Boes made 26 saves in the Wheat Kings' net.

  The Wheat Kings were down 3-1 after Walchuk's goal early the third period but pressed from that point forward, sending 20 shots on the Spokane net in the final frame.

  However, Holmberg's second goal just 66 seconds after Hawryluk had pulled Brandon to within a goal 3-2 sucked the lift out of the comeback attempt.

  "It was a tough game to lose.  I think we worked really hard tonight, we deserved that win, I think," said Brandon forward Nick Buonassisi on CKLQ's post-game show, "If we play like that more often, we aren't going to lose too many games.    They capitalized on our mistakes, we made a few, especially at the wrong times, and they're a very skilled team and can capitalize on chances like that."

  The loss was Brandon's seventh in a row and 11th of their last 12 contests and leaves the Wheat Kings with a 10-17-2-2 record and five points out of a playoff spot in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

  "We're obviously not the most skilled team and we're pretty young.  I've been on a few teams like that where you're young, and there's not much you can do on the skill side of the game," added Buonassisi, "You just have to work as hard as you can.  I feel like we're playing well enough and as soon as a couple of lucky goals go in, we'll start to bang off a couple of wins, no problem."

  Brandon will try to bang out one of those elusive victories on Saturday night when they host the red-hot Red Deer Rebels (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...Friday's victory was Spokane's first win in the Wheat City since November 10, 2000...Killarney product Reid Gow was pointless with a +2 rating for the Chiefs on Friday...Brandon product Joel Edmundson scored a goal and was +2 in his Kamloops debut Friday, helping the Blazers to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Prince George Cougars.
