Four Goal First Carries Blades over Brandon

The Brandon Wheat Kings were hoping to play the spoiler role on Friday night but any thoughts of crashing the Saskatoon Blades’ party disappeared in the opening period.

Saskatoon jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead and went on to a 7-4 victory over the Wheat Kings, giving the Blades their franchise record 14th consecutive victory.

Matej Stransky had a first period hat-trick for the Blades while former Wheat King Brenden Walker had a goal and two assists for Saskatoon.

“The 4-on-4 goal really hurt us and as the rest of the period went on, I really thought our push-back wasn’t where it needed to be,” said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We had to realize that the momentum was getting swung around and we didn’t do a very good job of that in the first period.”

Chad Robinson, Eric Roy, Jens Meilleur and Taylor Cooper scored the goals for Brandon, who have lost three in a row and six of their last seven games.

“We turned the puck over on the power-play when we should have gotten it deep, the 4-on-4 goal in the first period hurt us and then, also, things in the second and third period,” added Gylywoychuk, “ We kind of get ourselves out of a hole, we’re trying to climb back out and then we do something with puck management that just shouldn’t happen.”

Curtis Honey started for the Wheat Kings and allowed four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Corbin Boes with 1:22 left in the first period.

  Boes stopped 25 of 27 shots the rest of the way in his first appearance since suffering a knee injury on January 25th.

“He’s been out for a long time. He came in and you could tell that as the game went on, he got a lot more comfortable,” said Gylywoychuk, “It’s too bad we had to put him in that situation but it’s good to have him back in the net.”

The Wheat Kings will conclude their two-game Saskatchewan road trip on Sunday when they visit the Swift Current Broncos (6:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).

Chaff...Brandon defenceman Nick Walters is facing a possible suspension after being assessed a checking-to-the-head major and game misconduct in the first period of Friday’s game...Brandon is now 2-16-0-0 this season against the top four teams in the Eastern Conference (Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary and Prince Albert).
