Curtis Honey made 36 saves on Saturday night |
Nick Buonassisi scored a pair of first period goals as the Wheat Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes but the Raiders tied it on Anthony Bardaro’s goal in the final minute of the middle frame and Dakota Conroy’s goal 3:21 into the third period.
However, Tim McGauley finished off a great feed from Richard Nejezchleb to give Brandon a 3-2 lead six minutes into the third period, a goal that came just seconds after Honey had robbed Conroy in a goal-mouth scramble at the other end.
It was McGauley’s first goal since January 19th and there’s no doubt that sequence certainly changed the momentum of the contest.
“Curtis made not only one save, but he also made the save off the rebound. That’s the way it usually happens, where you have chances against and you need a save from your goalie at those times,” said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We went down and executed and it was a big momentum swing for us.”
Jayce Hawryluk added the insurance goal for the Wheat Kings to snap a six-game pointless streak for him.
The victory was Brandon’s first on the road since January 25th and snapped a six-game losing streak for the Wheat Kings.
Brandon concludes their three-game in three-night Saskatchewan road trip Sunday when they visit the Regina Pats.
