The line of Jens Meilleur, Taylor Cooper and Tim McGauley combined for eight points with Meilleur scoring twice, Cooper having a goal and two assists and McGauley registering three assists in the contest.
"They played really well. The thing about the line is Timmy had a little jump to his step and when you have a line that's going, you have the confidence of putting them in," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "They had some time in our zone where they had to play defence, and they did that. Taylor Cooper is starting to skate, he's starting to have some confidence, Jens compliments those guys well because he's going to work hard and Tim McGauley has been good at both ends of the rink. Those guys were rewarded tonight."
While that trio was the Wheat Kings go-to line last night, it was rookie John Quenneville that notched the game-winning goal, snapping a 1-1 tie with just over four minutes remaining in the second period.
It gave the Wheat Kings the lead through 40 minutes for just the 12th time in 55 games this season.
That goal plus Cooper's power-play marker midway through the third period both game at crucial times for Brandon.
"We've had a lot of trouble with that lately, once we get the lead and keep pushing for another goal," said Quenneville, who upped his rookie season totals to eight goals and 17 points in 37 games, "We did that and, obviously, it paid off."
In additional to the timely offence, Brandon also got another solid performance in net from Curtis Honey.
Honey made 36 saves including 16 in the second period in helping the Wheat Kings to a victory it what was a sloppy game for the first 35 or so minutes, featuring a number of odd-man rushes for both teams and solid netminding at both ends.
"There were some times we left him battling for us and he gave us a chance back there," said Gylywoychuk, "At the end, we found a way for us to have the confidence and stick around and get the win at the end of the night."
Axel Blomqvist scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes while Ty Rimmer finished with 29 saves in the Lethbridge night.
Brandon (20-31-2-2) moved to within nine points of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the victory.
The Wheat Kings' next action is Friday night when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
Chaff...former Wheat King Brenden Walker played his 250th career WHL game Wednesday and had three assists in Saskatoon's 7-1 victory over Prince Albert...attendance Wednesday was 2,901, the lowest for a Wheat Kings' game since March 8, 2006...Hockey Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne will be the guest speaker at the 2013 CKLQ Wheat Kings' Sportsman's Dinner this Thursday. The dinner is held annually to raise money for the hockey club's scholarship foundation.
