Pats Edge Wheat Kings

Jordan Papirny made his Wheat Kings' debut on Friday night
Lane Scheidl had two goals and an assist including the winning goal with 2:32 left in the third period, lifting the Regina Pats to a 3-2 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

The victory snapped Regina’s eight-game losing streak while Brandon has now lost four in a row.

Jayce Hawryluk scored both goals for Brandon, the first on a power-play at the 13:18 mark of the first period that snapped the Wheat Kings 0-for-29 slump with the man advantage.

“I thought we had possession time, I thought we were finding seams, I liked the way we moved around in the zone,” said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought once we let the puck do the moving and really worked harder at the top of the zone, it opened up some looks. We made a nice seam play in the goal.”

Hawryluk’s second goal that briefly tied the game 2-2 at 14:17 of the third period also came just one second after a Wheat Kings’ power-play ended.

The game featured few scoring chances for either side and a combined 48 shots on goal –24 for each team.

"A lot of the play was to the outside. I don’t think we penetrated enough, I don’t think we directed enough pucks to the net,” said Anning, “I give them credit, they stayed within the house, they protected the net front. They made it difficult. Iit was kind of a streaky game where it went back-and-forth with zone time and to give up a goal late after tying it up, it stings.”

Jordan Papirny made 21 saves for the Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League debut for the 16-year old Edmonton product.

“I thought he looked composed in the net. The one thing you’ll get from Jordan, he’s going to battle hard, he’s going to fight to see pucks, he’s going to fight for position in the net,” said Anning, “I thought he was at the top of the crease all night, I thought he looked comfortable and confident...I thought he was fine tonight and did everything he could to give us a chance to win.”

Brandon (18-31-2-2) and the Pats will play the back half of their home-and-home series Saturday night (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
