Playoffs Officially Out of Reach

Quintin Lisoway had one of Brandon's goals on Wednesday
It's been the expectation for weeks but it became reality for the Brandon Wheat Kings at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday.

There'll be no playoffs for the Wheat Kings this year -- the first time in 13 years the club won't be in the post-season party and just the second time in the last 21 years.

Brycen Martin scored 1:05 into overtime as Swift Current beat Brandon 3-2 on Wednesday night and that loss, coupled with Kootenay's 2-0 win over Medicine Hat, left the Wheat Kings officially on the outside looking in.

Wednesday's game began with a 'sleepy' first period for the Wheat Kings, an extension of their 6-1 loss in Swift Current on Sunday.

The Broncos grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Richard Nedomlel and Ryon Moser and outshot Brandon 12-7 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Wheat Kings were much better over the game's final 41 minutes with Quintin Lisoway scoring his first goal since joining Brandon full-time January 10th in the second period and Taylor Cooper getting the equalizer on a power-play with 5:34 left in the third period.

"Give credit to the guys.  They responded in the second period.  We had more jump in our step, we were in on pucks more, we created more things," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "During the second half of the game, I thought we were the better team."

Corbin Boes stopped 31 shots in the Brandon net but couldn't prevent the Wheat Kings' losing streak from hitting five games.

Brandon has also lost eight of their last nine contests and 12 of their last 15.

Now, the Wheat Kings are faced with the task of playing out the final 2 1/2 weeks of the regular season with what could be termed as eight meaningless games.

However, the team can't take that mentality.

"You have to play for the right reasons, you have to push to get better every day," said Gylywoychuk, "You have to play for the guy you're sitting beside in the dressing room, the guy that's sitting across from the dressing and, first and foremost, you have to play for the jersey you're wearing."

Brandon will bein Saskatoon on Friday night to open a three-game in three-night Saskatchewan road trip that will also include stops in Prince Albert on Saturday and Regina on Sunday.

Chaff...Saskatoon pushed their winning streak to 17 games on Wednesday with a 3-2 shootout victory in Calgary...Brandon product Carson Perreaux had a goal and two assists to help Prince Albert to a 7-0 win over Regina on Wednesday night...Brandon's Joel Edmundson notched his eighth goal of the season in Kamloops' 5-3 loss to Vancouver on Wednesday...in a rematch of last year's WHL Championship Series, Edmonton overcame a 3-1 second period deficit to defeat Portland 4-3 in the only regular season meeting between the Conference leaders.
