| Jordan Papirny stopped 27 shots for his first career WHL win on Friday |
Jayce Hawryluk's power-play goal with 4:04 left in the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-2 win over the visiting Kootenay Ice.
Hawryluk, who was returning to Brandon's lineup after a one-game ban for school-related issues, took a goal-mouth pass from Tim McGauley and put it past Kootenay goaltender MacKenzie Skapski to help the Wheat Kings snap a three-game losing streak.
"We need to find some goals on our power-play, and it has here over the last little while," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "It was a big goal. It's funny how you can draw plays in the chalboard and talk about different things and work on them in practice but we found a puck and put it in. It was a great goal for our team."
Hawryluk, who leads all 1996-born WHL players in scoring with 40 points, was Brandon's second round pick in the 2011 Bantam Draft while one of the Wheat Kings' first round picks two years ago, Jordan Papirny, stopped 27 shots to collect his first career Western Hockey League victory.
Papirny, 16, has been with the team for the past three weeks after a knee injury knocked Corbin Boes out of the Brandon lineup and was making just his second career start and first on home-ice.
"Getting the win at home was pretty special but sharing it with a group of guys like that was awesome," said Papirny, "They've been nothing but great to me."
Papirny's stint with the Wheat Kings is over, for now.
He's headed home to joined his AMHL team (SSAC Athletics) as they close out the regular season this weekend and begin their playoffs this week.
Ryan Pulock added a goal and an assist for Brandon (21-34-2-2) while Jack Palmer broke a 21-game goalless drought with his first goal since December 28th.
Brock Montgomery and Austin Vetterl scored the goals for Kootenay (27-29-2-0) while Skapski finished with 23 saves in the Ice net.
The Wheat Kings close out their seven-game home stand by hosting the Ice again on Saturday night (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Portland's 6-2 loss to Tri-City Friday means the Winterhawks could only finish with 123 if they were to win out...former Wheat King Jordin Tootoo played his 500th career NHL game Friday in Detroit's 5-2 loss to Anaheim on Friday. Tootoo has 46 goals, 127 points and 757 penalty minutes in his NHL career...former Wheat Kings Tyler Dittmer, Del Cowan and Paul Ciarelli all scored in the Manitoba Bisons 6-2 win over the Regina Cougars in Game #1 of their Best-of-Three Canada West Quarter-Final series.
