Colton Waltz |
The 17-year old has been given the opportunity to play on a regular basis during the second half of the season and the team has been rewarded with steady improvement, particularly in Waltz's physicality.
"I think you want to establish yourself with the other players out there. I've talked with the coaching staff and that's the approach they want me to have so I took it upon myself to do that," said Waltz after Thursday's practice, "I've always been more of an aggressive player. I like the hitting so it's alway something that I've always wanted to do."
The 6-foot-1, 190 pound Waltz has two goals, five points and a minus-10 rating in 46 games this season but seems to have found a lot more consistency during the second half of the season.
"I think I'm starting to fit in, find my game and get into a bit of a comfort zone," said Waltz, "I've been able to rush the puck a bit, jump into the play more often and I think it's coming along."
Waltz and the Wheat Kings host the Eastern Conference leading Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
Brandon is looking to win three in a row for the first time since starting the season with four straight victories while Edmonton tries for an 11th consecutive win.
Chaff...Brandon is winless against the Oil Kings this season and have lost nine straight against Edmonton (regular season + playoffs) going into Friday's game...the Wheat Kings are 4-for-13 (30.8%) on the power-play in their last three games after going 0-for-23 in their previous six games...Brandon's Jayce Hawryluk is on a four-game point-scoring streak (5 G, 2 A).
