  Wheat Kings' prospect Tanner Browne needs to overcome what was nearly a lost season in order to make Brandon's roster this year.

  The 16-year old product of Kelowna, British Columbia played just a dozen games in 2012-2013 because of a shoulder injury, a torn labrum that he underwent surgery to repair on March 1st.

  "The doctor said it was one of the worst he had seen in a while," said Brown after Wednesday's opening rookie camp scrimmage, "Rehab was tough, it was a long process but being here now, it feels great and it's almost 100 per cent so I'm right back in there, getting back at 'er and I'm feeling good."

  Browne attended the Team Pacific Summer Camp in Calgary in late July, his real taste of on-ice competition since the surgery.

  "I skated a while a couple of months after but nothing with pucks or shooting or contact for a long time until Team Pacific Camp," said Browne, "It's good to come back, surrounded by good players as well, and see where I fit in."

  The 5-foot-11, 196 pound was Brandon's second round pick in the 2012 Bantam Draft and helped Team B.C. to a gold medal at the Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup last November.

  There's no doubt Browne has some offensive skill after registering 22 goals and 55 points in 63 games with the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy's top bantam squad in 2011-2012 but he may have to adjust his game slightly until his shoulder and his confidence level get back to 100 per cent.

  "Smart hockey, simple plays, keep it simple and not try and do anything too special," said Browne, "My skill level isn't back to where it was at.  I just have to work hard again and I should be good here in a couple of months and 100 per cent like I was last year."

  The Wheat Kings' rookie camp will continue tonight with a scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. (Westman Communications Group Place).

  In the scrimmage Wednesday morning, Brandon product Tyler Coulter scored three times and set up another as Team Gold outscored the Black Team by a 10-6 count.

  Braylon Shmyr and Linden McCorrister added two goals and an assist for the winners with singles going to Dakota Boutin, Braden Billaney and Kale Clague.

  Jesse Gabrielle scored two goals in a losing cause for Team Black.
