The Boissevain product spent the last four seasons as the Prince George Cougars’ assistant GM and Director of Player Personnel before abruptly resigning from the Cougars in late April, about two weeks prior to the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
“You want to work and be in situations where you have a chance to have success. You look at Brandon’s track record, with Kelly (McCrimmon) being the biggest part of that,” said Klippenstein in an interview with CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston, “Working for him and getting to know him better and learning from all his experience. Also, I’m very aware of the situation Brandon is in right now and their draft last year and the players they have coming. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Brandon Wheat Kings.”
Klippenstein inherits the position from long-time Wheat Kings’ Director of Player Personnel Al MacPherson, who spent more than two decades on the job before retiring this past July.
“I obviously have a lot of respect for Al and the entire Wheat Kings scouting staff,” said Klippenstein, “I’ve had a chance to work in the same circles with them and I look forward to adding what Al and his staff have done here in the last little while.”
Prior to joining Prince George, Klippenstein also served as an assistant coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and worked in the WHL as a Head Scout with Moose Jaw and as an assistant coach with Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
And now, the Boissevain, Manitoba product has come full circle back to his home province.
“I’m excited to be, what I consider, coming home,” added Klippenstein, “I grew up in Manitoba, played the majority of my minor hockey in Manitoba and excited to be part of the Brandon Wheat Kings.”
Klippenstein’s appointment comes just five days before the Wheat Kings open their 2013 training camp.
