Gabrielle Not Taking Anything for Granted

The Brandon Wheat Kings officially open their 2013 training camp Wednesday.

About 55 rookie hopefuls will hit the ice for the first time Friday morning, among them 16-year old Jesse Gabrielle.

Gabrielle spent about ten days with the Wheat Kings last March and got a chance to play in a pair of WHL games.

"It just gives you a little taste.  You want to be here for the whole season and while it was a great time while I was here but you want more," said Gabrielle on Tuesday night, "That's what I'm going to do is try to get into 60-plus games this year, hopefully."

Gabrielle was a fifth round pick of Brandon in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft and had 15 goals and 43 points in 25 games with the Eagan Wildcats in the South Suburban Conference of Minnesota High School hockey last season.

Originally from Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Gabrielle and his family have moved several times during his minor hockey career and are now calling Brandon home.

Despite that, Gabrielle says he can't take anything for granted.

"You don't think you have a spot, you always come in here fighting for one," said Gabrielle, "You never have a spot on a team, it's never 100 per cent.  You have to come in here, work your hardest and make the coaches have to take you."

The 5-foot-11, 195 pound Gabrielle one of four prospects hoping to make Brandon's roster on a full-time basis this year that got their feet wet in that way a year ago.

Braylon Shmyr, Ryley Lindgren and Tyler Coulter were the others.
