The Brandon Wheat Kings surrendered five goals in the second period and dropped an 8-4 decision to the Regina Pats on Saturday night.
Chandler Stephenson had two goals and an assist to pace the Regina offence while former Wheat King Geordie Maguire had a goal and an helper for the Pats.
Maguire’s goal with 9:14 left in the second period came just 31 seconds after Tim McGauley second goal of the game had pulled the Wheat Kings into a 2-2 tie.
The Pats would add three more goals before the end of the middle frame to take a 6-2 lead into the intermission break.
“I thought when we got the second goal with under ten minutes to play, we had a half game left, we were tied up, hadn’t been our best but were certainly in position to win the game or at least be in the game,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “That next shift, we gave up the go-ahead goal to them and I really felt that was the turning point of the game, even though it only made it a 3-2 game, I thought that that goal really hurt us.”
Brandon was also hurt by penalties in the second period, being assessed four straight minor penalties that killed any chance the club had of generating momentum.
John Quenneville’s power-play goal early in the third period got Brandon back to within three but their fate was sealed when Richard Nejezchleb took a boarding major at the nine minute mark that sent the Pats to a five-minute power-play.
Ryley Lindgren scored Brandon’s fourth goal while the club was shorthanded but it was sandwiched between power-play goals from Boston Leier and Stephenson that made the final score 8-4.
Curtis Honey went the distance in the Brandon net and faced 51 shots including 25 in the second period alone.
The Wheat Kings fell to 19-15-3-0 with the loss while also allowing Regina to leapfrog past them and back into fifth-place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Brandon will continue their road trip Monday night when they visit the Red Deer Rebels (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
