Laurikainen Shines in Broncos Win

Eetu Laurikainen stopped 38 shots to lead the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

The Broncos scored three of their goals in a seven minute and 16 second span of the second period, with Cavin Leth, Colby Cave and Andrew Johnson netting the goals.

"I think we had some really bad defensive breakdowns.  Bad net play, he didn't collapse down to the net and we weren't strong around the net and it cost us," said Brandon centre John Quenneville on CKLQ's post-game show, "This one definitely stings.  I think we dominated the play for a good portion of the game.  These are the ones that you have to win."

Dakota Odgers, son of former Wheat King Jeff Odgers, opened the scoring for the Broncos by scoring his first career WHL goal just 13 seconds into the first period.

John Quenneville tied the game before the five minute mark, extending his point streak to six games, with Richard Nejezchleb's power-play goal midway through the first gave Brandon a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Richards Bukarts scored the other goal for the Wheat Kings, with his marker coming late in the second period after the Broncos had scored their three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead.

The Wheat Kings outshot Swift Current 41-26 but still suffered their fourth loss in their last seven home games (3-3-1-0).

Wheat Kings' GM and coach Kelly McCrimmon said it was the type of game that you shouldn't read too much into the end result.

"We need to win on home ice.  We're in the results business and we didn't get points tonight," said McCrimmon, "But, to overlook how well we're playing would be counter productive as well.  I think we did all kinds of good things tonight."

Jordan Papirny started his 15th straight game and stopped 15 of 19 shots through 40 minutes before being replaced to start the third by Curtis Honey.

Honey stopped all seven shots he faces in the third period in his first action since October 30th.

Brandon returns to action Saturday when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors.
