Curtis Honey stopped 29 shots to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-1 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night.
Quintin Lisoway’s first goal of the season 5:27 into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie on a night that the Wheat Kings weren’t at their best.
Brandon had a season-low three shots on goal in the first period and were outshot 24-11 in the first 40 minutes but still found themselves in a 1-1 tie going into the final frame.
“What kind of turned us around in the third a little bit is that as bad as we’d been, if we could look forwards and not backwards, we were 20 minutes away from a win if we could win the third period,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “The points are huge, all the things that we talk about all the time.”
After a scoreless first period, Reid Zalitch opened the scoring for Moose Jaw, scoring the first goal of his WHL career 8:10 into the second period.
Eric Roy tied it for Brandon, re-directing a centreing pass from Brett Kitt home at the 12:53 mark of the middle frame.
Kitt also had an assist on Lisoway’s game-winning goal while Tyler Coulter completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 10 seconds left in regulation.
Honey was rightfully named the game’s first star for his efforts in his first start since October 30th.
“We game up way more scoring chances than we have been, and very high quality chances. That was the concern for me was how poor we were in our end of the rink. He was at the top of the game tonight, showed no signs of rust whatsoever and was the difference in the game, for sure.”
Brandon is now 6-0-0-0 against the Warriors this season and 16-14-2-0 overall.
The Wheat Kings return to action Tuesday when they host the Kamloops Blazers (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
