Nejezchleb Set to Return, Impress

Richard Nejezchleb is expected to return to the
Wheat Kings' lineup this weekend

  It's been an injury-plagued rookie season for Brandon Wheat Kings' forward Richard Nejezchleb.

  The Czech import should return this weekend after missing 21 games with a lacerated finger that included some nerve and tendon damage and required surgery to repair.

  The injury happened in a freakish way during a January 8th home game against the Calgary Hitmen when teammate Nick Buonassisi was checked in front of the Brandon bench and went Ass over TeaKettle.

  "I was just looking at coach (Dwayne Gylywoychuk) and had my hand on the boards and Buonassisi's skate went up and cut my finger," said Nejezchleb on Thursday after participating in his first full practice with the Wheat Kings in more than seven weeks, "It's been a long year, yeah."

  Nejezchleb has not only missed the last 7 1/2 weeks, he also sat for 15 games during the first half of the season with a shoulder injury.

  The 18-year old admits one of his goals over the final eight games of the regular season is try to prove himself to the coaches and other within the Wheat Kings' organization.

  When the 6-foot-2, 212 pound Nejezchleb has played this season, he's been somewhat effective, scoring nine goals and 18 points in 27 games.

  "I want to show my best so they won't have any problems to fit me into the team next year," said Nejezchleb, "I will play hard because it's an honour to wear a Wheat Kings' jersey, for me, and play in this league."

  Nejezchleb looks like he'll get a good chance to prove himself as he skated on a line with fellow rookies Jayce Hawryluk and Tim McGauley on Thursday.

  Hawryluk is seventh and McGauley ninth among rookie scorers in the WHL this season.

Chaff...former Wheat Kings Brenden Walker (13 G, 12 A) and Michael Ferland (6 G, 18 A) have combined for 49 points during Saskatoon's currently 17-game win streak -- a streak that includes three victories over Brandon...Blades' coach  Lorne Molleken will be looking for his 600th coaching victory Friday.  He'd be just the second coach in WHL history to reach that milestone...the Wheat Kings are on pace to score fewer than 200 goals for the first time in their 46-year history in the Western Hockey League.
