Walters, who has seven career goals in 199 career WHL games, scored as the 12th shooter for the Wheat Kings as Brandon picked up their third win in the last four games.
Walters was the hero at the end, but Brandon goaltender Corbin Boes was the main reason why the game even got to that point.
Boes stopped 43 shots in regulation and overtime and then denied 11 of 12 Saskatoon attempts in the shootout in picking up his first win since December 8th.
“He was standing on his hand late in the third, late in the third after we had tied and they came at us for the last bit and he made a couple of great saves,” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Even in the second, he made a couple of great saves and really kept us in the game the whole night.”
Boes’ performance came on the heels of watching three straight games from the bench while Curtis Honey started, and played well in helping Brandon to two wins on those three contests.
“Now, we have a good healthy competition between the two goalies and Corbin was really good tonight and, obviously, was the reason why we won tonight,” added Ritchie, “Corbin’s a competitor, he wants to play and that’s what you want from your goalie. I can tell you one thing, he wasn’t happy not playing...he’s a guy that’s very intense and he wants to play.”
The game turned into a goaltending battle from about the midway mark of the first period on, with Andrey Makarov stopping 31 shots in the Saskatoon goal and 10 of 12 Brandon shooters in the shootout.
It was an unexpected low-scoring game after the teams had combined for 27 goals in their first two head-to-head matchups this season.
Tim McGauley scored his 14th goal of the season and eighth in the last 14 games with 4:15 left in regulation to send the game to extra time while Colton Waltz also scored for Brandon.
Colin Valcourt and Lukas Sutter scored the goals for the Blades.
Despite the win, the Wheat Kings remain nine points out of a playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.
Brandon’s next action is Tuesday when they’ll host Saskatoon (7:05 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
