Curtis Valk and Dylan Bredo had a goal and two assists each as the eighth-place Tigers moved seven points ahead of Brandon for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Valk's goal 41 seconds into the third period gave Medicine Hat it's first lead of the contest and Brandon barely mustered a counter-attack, being outshot 15-7 in the third period and 35-22 overall.
"We had set ourselves up, we had gone through and gave ourselves a chance to win a game on home ice," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "We weren't ready to start again and we can't let that happen on the first shift of the third period...they outworked us, found a way to score a goal and that gave them life from that point on."
"We didn't get it going in the offensive zone and really grind them out like we wanted to," added Wheat Kings' forward Jason Swyripa, who scored one of the two Brandon goals, "All night long, it was one-and-outs and we didn't carry the play as much as we would have liked to."
Tim McGauley also scored for the Wheat Kings while Jacob Doty and Hunter Shinkaruk had the other goals for Medicine Hat.
The loss was Brandon's third in a row and fourth in five games since the Christmas break.
"We have to bring out tempo up. We got to get more intense, and we have do a lot of things better anad we know it," added Swyripa, "Hopefully, we can change that around and start really getting some grind time in the offensive zone and playing a better D-Zone as well. Hopefully, things start to come around."
Corbin Boes stopped 31 shots in the Wheat Kings' net Saturday while Cam Lanigan made 20 saves for Medicine Hat.
Brandon is back in action Sunday when they visit the surging Regina Pats (5:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
Chaff...F Jayce Hawryluk returned to the Brandon lineup after missing four games while playing with Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Hawryluk, who suffered an ankle injury in Quebec, missed warmup but still saw a regular shift for much of the contest...D Rene Hunter also returned to the Brandon lineup for the first time since leaving the team at the end of November and saw a regular shift and time on the club's penalty-kill unit...McGauley's opening goal in the first period marked just the second time in the last 15 games that the Wheat Kings had scored first...former Wheat King Brodie Melnychuk has joined the University of Manitoba Bisons for the second half of the Canada West season.
