Brooks Macek had his first career Western Hockey League hat-trick for the Hitmen, who scored six times in the third period to hit double digits on the Wheat Kings for the first time since 2005.
“The X’s and O’s and systems and all that doesn’t really matter when you don’t want to come to the rink and compete,” said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ’s post-game show, “There was a lot of examples of it all over the ice. They were first to pucks, they got pucks out, we didn’t get pucks out, even assignments defending, they got on the wrong side of our checks. They took advantage of us and showed us a lesson in hockey, that’s for sure.”
Chase Lang and Pavlo Padakin added a pair of goals each for the Hitmen, who went 5-for-9 on the power-play in the contest.
Calgary had scored just three power-play goals in their previous 43 opportunities.
The Wheat Kings were shorthanded 22 times during their three-game Alberta road trip – a bad omen for the WHL’s worst penalty-kill unit.
“We should have learned our lesson in Edmonton. As the game went on, our frustration really showed through in some of the penalties and put ourselves in bad situations with our discipline,” said Gylywoychuk, who’s team has surrendered a WHL high 54 power-play goals against this season, “Those things have to change, first and foremost.”
Chad Robinson and 15-year old callup Braylon Shmyr scored the goals for the Wheat Kings, who fell to 14-22-2-2 with the loss.
Brandon’s next action is Saturday when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
