Raiders Edge Wheat Kings Friday

Marek Kalus scored both goals for Brandon on Friday

Jonas Knutsen's goal 5:39 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Prince Albert Raiders to a 3-2 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

Mark McNeill scored the other two goals for the Raiders, both on the power-play, while Luke Siemens stopped 33 shots in the Prince Albert net.

It was a game that saw the Wheat Kings did a lot of good things, except collect the two points.

"I thought we were the better team 5-on-5, I thought we did some really good things, I thought we pushed the pace a little bit with them, we made them work through a lot of the game," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "What it came down to was a special teams game, and that's what it's going to come down to from now to the end of the season."

Not only did the Raiders scored a pair of goals with the man advantage but they also shut down the Wheat Kings' power-play when it mattered most, killing off a 6-on-3 (including the extra attacker for Brandon) for the final 60 seconds of the contest.

Marek Kalus scored both goals for Brandon, his first two since joining the Wheat Kings in a January 10th trade with Spokane, while Curtis Honey made 25 saves in the Brandon goal.

The Wheat Kings outshot Prince Albert 35-28 in the contest but didn't have a lot of puck-luck around the Raiders' net.

"There were a few times I thought we could have been a little bit more grittier around the net," said Gylywoychuk, "We've getting opportunities, we've having some in-zone time in the offensive zone, now we have to be a little more grittier and learn to put the puck in the net when we have an opportunity."

The loss coupled with Medicine Hat's 2-1 win in Edmonton Friday leaves the Wheat Kings nine points behind the eighth-place Tigers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon hits the road Saturday, visiting the Saskatoon Blades (6:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
