Roy, Boes Lift Wheat Kings to Win

Eric Roy scored 55 seconds into overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Red Deer Rebels 2-1 on Friday night.

Chad Robinson had a goal and an assist against his former team while Corbin Boes made 43 saves in the Wheat Kings’ net.

“Corbin was excellent again. He made some real big saves as the game went along, kept us in it,” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We were fighting the puck most of the net, just trying to find our way, and Corbin was real good.”

Boes has stopped 128 of 135 shots over the last three games, two of them Wheat Kings’ victories, after sitting and watching Curtis Honey make three straight starts immediately after the WHL trade deadline on January 10th.

“I think he’s challenging, he’s getting out of his crease. If you look at some of his goals against, he’s been just inside the blue paint” added Ritchie about his 6-foot-3, 216 pound netminder, “Lately, he’s been getting outside the blue paint and he’s a big guy...there’s not much room to find a spot to shoot on him so when he’s getting outside the paint, it’s tough to score on him.”

Surrendering 40-plus shots per night is not likely a long-term recipe for success but it’s worked well enough for the Wheat Kings.

Overall, Brandon has now won four of their last six contests with Friday’s win moving the Wheat Kings to within nine points of a playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Brandon finishes the season series 4-0-0-0 against the Rebels with all four games being decided by a single goal, including two in overtime.

The Wheat Kings continue their Alberta road trip Saturday by paying a visit to the Edmonton Oil Kings (7:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
