Jobke’s 58-foot seeing-eye shot from the right point gave the Pats their first lead of the game and helped Regina to a fifth consecutive victory while leaving the Wheat Kings on a four-game losing streak.
For the second straight game, Brandon entered the third period in a tie hockey game and, for the second straight game, couldn’t put enough of a push on to gain an important two points in the Eastern Conference standings.
“Once they got the lead, I thought Regina did a good job in managing the puck and put a lot of pucks into soft spots in our D-Zone where our D-Men had to go back and retrieve pucks,” said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ’s post-game show, “They played a structured game and as we tried to put pucks up the wall, their D-Men continued to push down on us and they really hemmed us in at times. We need to make better first puck out looks, really get our speed going so that we can put them on their heals.”
After a scoreless opening periods, Brandon opened the scoring 45 seconds into the second period on a power-play goal from Tim McGauley, his 11thof the season and fifth in the last nine games.
Lane Scheidl tied it for the puts with under 2 ½ minutes to go in the middle frame on a power-play goal during a period where the Wheat Kings were tagged with three consecutive penalty-kill situations.
Morgan Klimchuk’s empty-net goal completed the scoring for the Pats with Matt Hewitt stopping 25 shots in the Regina goal.
Corbin Boes made 31 saves in net for Brandon, who fell to 14-24-2-2 with the loss.
The victory moved Regina past Medicine Hat and into eighth-place and the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, eight points ahead of the 11th-place Wheat Kings.
Brandon’s next action is Tuesday night when they host the Calgary Hitmen (7:05 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
