Honey Effort Not Enough as Wheat Kings Fall in Edmonton

Curtis Lazar scored twice and Dylan Wruck had a goal and two assists to pace the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 5-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

The game was a lot closer on the scoreboard than it was on the ice.

Edmonton outshot Brandon 52-26 overhaul in the contest with Wheat Kings’ netminder Curtis Honey giving his team a chance with his strong play, particularly in stopping all 14 shots he facing in the third period, many of them quality scoring chances for the Oil Kings.

“He made some great saves for us in the third, for sure,” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “When you’re down 5-2 going into the third, you need to have a little bit of character and play for your teammates and play for Curtis, he’s faced 40 shots after two periods. You have to play for your teammates.”

Jayce Hawryluk and Eric Roy scored the goals for the Wheat Kings, who had battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game 2-2 midway through the second period.

However, the Eastern Conference leading Oil Kings turned it up a notch after the marketing timeout in the middle frame and the Wheat Kings were unable to match the pace.

Lazar scored both of his goal and Wruck had all three of his points in the six minute and five second span that immediately followed the marketing break, breaking open the 2-2 contest.

“We were good right up until we made it 2-2, and then after 2-2 they took it to us and we weren’t the same,” added Ritchie, “When you make it 2-2 on the road playing a good team, you’d think you’d have good enegy and carry some momentum off that but we didn’t.”

Michael St. Croix and Stephane Legault also scored for Edmonton while Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots in the Oil Kings’ net.

The Wheat Kings (18-28-2-2) remain nine points out of a playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Brandon concludes the three-game in three-night Alberta road trip Sunday by visiting the Calgary Hitmen (4:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
