Streaks Continue as Blades beat Brandon

Brenden Walker scored against his former team on Friday
Former Wheat King Brenden Walker scored his 28th goal of the season to help the Saskatoon Blades to a 4-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

Richard Nejezchleb scored in his return from a 21-game absence, notching the only Brandon goal on a power-play with just 2:22 left in the third period with the Wheat Kings already down 3-0.

It was an odd game that featured the Wheat Kings playing well at times, but also going through a 20-minute stretch in the first and second periods where they registered just two shots on goal.

“It was real important tonight to manage the puck properly and, at times we did and at points when we didn’t manage the puck where they got some great chances,” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Corbin made some big saves for us when we only had those two shots in that 20 minute period.”

Shane McColgan, Nick Zajac and Josh Nicholls, into an empty-net, also scored for the Blades in the contest while Andrey Makarov stopped 21 shots in the Saskatoon net.

Ritchie felt they didn’t get to scoring areas consistently enough to put any pressure on Saskatoon.

“We did some things along the boards better than we have but we didn’t take anything to the hard areas tonight, which I felt we had to do to be successful,” said Ritchie, “I thought we had a lot of one-and-dones tonight.”

The loss was Brandon’s sixth in a row and ninth in ten games while the Blades pushed their winning streak to 18 games – the longest in the WHL in 16 years.

It was also the 600th victory in the WHL coaching career of Saskatoon  bench boss Lorne Molleken.

Chaff...D Eric Roy was named the Tip Top Tailors Wheat Kings' Player of the Month on Friday.  Roy had a team-high six goals and eight points in 12 games in February...former Wheat King Alessio Bertaggia scored in overtime as Spokane beat Victoria 4-3 on Friday night.
