Brandon let a 3-1, third period lead slip away with Chandler Stephenson scored the game-tying goal on a 5-on-3 power-play with just over five minutes left and then netting the shootout winner for the Pats.
“We put ourselves in a good spot. Those are legitimate calls, there’s no argueing those calls, those are calls that are easy to make for the officials,” said Brandon assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ’s post-game show, “They’re something we need to learn from and get better from.”
Eric Roy’s power-play goal gave the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead during a first period that saw Brandon outshoot the Pats 14-4.
Morgan Klimchuk tied it for the Pats 7:18 into the second period and then Jayce Hawryluk notched Brandon’s second power-play goal of the game with 2:07 left in the middle frame to make it 2-1.
Jason Swyripa gave Brandon a 3-1 lead at 7:41 of the third period before the Pats began their comeback on a Carson Samoridny goal with 8:46 left in the final frame.
Teagan Sacher stopped 28 shots in the Regina net while Corbin Boes made 24 saves for the Wheat Kings.
Being unable to garner two points Sunday was disappointing for the club but Brandon still managed to get three points out of a three-game in three-night Saskatchewan road trip.
“I thought the compete level was where it hadn’t been for a while, I thought it was a lot more consistent, I thought we had a lot more guys buying in and committing and doing the right things on the ice and paying the price to do a positive for the team,” said Anning, “Whether it’s chipping a puck out along the wall or finishing a check or tracking back on a back-check and eliminating a chance against, so I thought we did a lot of good things.”
Brandon returns home with four of their final five games of the season at Westman Communications Group Place including their next contest Friday against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
