It was a loss that ensured the Wheat Kings will finish in the basement in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference, and have a shot at the #1 pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
Moose Jaw jumped out to a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes, capitalizing on all four power-play chances they had in the first two periods.
“I didn’t think we brought the intensity that we’ve had the last 4-5 games, we didn’t bring that early on in the game and it cost us” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Our power-play didn’t do anything to get us momentum, we never skated, we never got on pucks and we made it real easy for them.”
The Wheat Kings’ penalty-kill had gone 18-for-20 in their previous seven games but it reverted back to its old ways on Friday.
“I thought we didn’t win any battle. If we got the puck, we’d turn it over and then they’d get back at us,” said Ritchie, “I didn’t think we boxed out as well, and they scored...our compete wasn’t there where we needed it to be on the PK.”
Jason Swyripa scored both goals for the Wheat Kings, giving him a career-high 10 this season including five in the last 11 games.
Curtis Honey started for Brandon and gave up four goals on 27 shots with Corbin Boes coming on in relief and stopping all 13 shots he faced in the third period.
Brandon (23-40-4-4) will close out their 2012-2013 season by hosting the Warriors on Saturday night (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
