Another Strong Third for Wheat Kings

  John Quenneville had two goals and an assist to pace the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday night.

  Brandon scored four straight games after falling behind 2-1 in the second period including three unanswered goals in the third.

  It was the second time this week that the Wheat Kings were tied 2-2 after 40 minutes and scored three unanswered third period goals.

  It was a good rebound victory for the Wheat Kings after they had dropped a 4-3 decision to Prince Albert in the first half of the home-ice weekend doubleheader.

  "We had trouble putting the puck in the net (Friday) night and, obviously, we have a good offensive team and one of the best teams in the league at scoring goals," said Quenneville on CKLQ's post-game show, "It was one of those nights (Friday) night, it wasn't going in for us and, tonight, I really think we stepped up and had a full 60 minute effort."

  Quenneville scored the game's key goal, a power-play marker with 9:11 left in the third period that snapped a 2-2 tie.

  The goal came just minutes after the Wheat Kings had killed off a Colton Waltz minor and ended a stretch where the team had scored once in their previous 15 man advantages.

  "There weren't a lot of special teams in the game but the one power-play we had early in the game, I thought we had great chances and we were really looking forward to getting another one," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "It was obviously much later in the game when we got our second opportunity but the guys made good."

  Jesse Gabrielle, Eric Roy and Rihards Bukarts also scored for Brandon while Jordan Papirny made 23 saves in the Wheat Kings' net.

  Brandon product Carson Perreaux and Josh Morrissey scored the goals for Prince Albert while Cole Cheveldave had a strong game in the Raiders' net, finishing with 37 saves.

  For Perreaux, the goal was his 14th of the season and sixth in five games against the Wheat Kings.

  Despite the win, Brandon (23-17-4-0) remains in sixth-place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Regina and Medicine Hat.

  The Wheat Kings are also just two points behind the East Division-leading Swift Current Broncos with a game in hand.

  Brandon gets a bit of break in their schedule, with their next game Friday (January 17) when they host Swift Current.
