He might be 6-foot-7, but Taylor Green isn’t necessarily the type of player that immediately sticks out on the Brandon Wheat Kings’ blueline.
A stay-at-home defeneman, Green has been able to post a particularly impressive statistic over the past two months, registering a +17 rating in his last 25 games.
Green, who was acquired from Seattle in August for conditional fifth round pick in the 2014 Bantam Draft, admits that it took him a while to adjust to his new team.
“Coming to a new group, it’s difficult to get things off fast but I think I’ve done a good job,” said Green after Brandon’s practice in Edmonton on Monday, “We play a really easy system here for the d-men, the forwards do a good job supporting us and (Colton) Waltz has done a great job in helping me out to on the back so it’s just been an accumulation of things, but I think just being more comfortable with the system has helped me the most.”
Green’s string of success coincides with a successful stint for the Wheat Kings, who are 17-6-5-0 in their last 28 contests – three of which Green was out of the Brandon lineup.
“As a collective, we’ve been really good. I can’t take all the credit, for sure,” chuckled Green, “These guys have been really good and I think, as a team not just a D-Unit but as a forward unit as well, we’ve been really good so, it’s fun.”
The Port Coquitlam, B.C. product also points to being able to remain focused on playing defence has allowed him to progress this season.
During his rookie season in Seattle in 2012-2013, Green bounced back and forth between forward and defence.
Green and the Wheat Kings open a four-game road trip on Tuesday when they visit the Edmonton Oil Kings (12:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
It’s the Oil Kings annual Hockey Hooky promotion, with about 7,000 school aged kids expected to be in attendance at Tuesday’s game.
Chaff…F John Quenneville (upper body) will miss his second straight game Tuesday and is listed as week-to-week… The Wheat Kings have scored at least one power-play goal in five consecutive games (7-for-20) and now lead the WHL with a 25.3% success rate for the season. The last time the Wheat Kings had the WHL’s #1 power-play was the 2004-2005 season…on the penalty-kill, Brandon is 21-for-25 (84.0%) in the last the last nine games…D Ryan Pulock and F Tim McGauley carry five-game point streaks into Tuesday’s contest while F Peter Quenneville has points in four straight games.
