Shmyr Returns with Hardware

  Brandon Wheat Kings' rookie Braylon Shmyr returned from the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with some hardware.

  The 16-year old helped Team Pacific to a silver medal after they fell 4-0 to the United States in Saturday's gold medal game.

  The team still managed their highest finish since 2009.

  "I'm super proud," said Shmyr after practicing with the Wheat Kings on Monday, "Going there and getting silver medal, that's something that's something really huge.  Team Pacific hadn't won a medal in a long time so that's something to be proud of.

  Shmyr had two assists and two points in six games at the tournament on a team whose 22-player roster was made up entirely of Western Hockey League players.

  The Calgary, Alberta product says it was a great experience, and he thinks there's a major lesson he learned at the tourament.

  "I learned that every shift that you have to be going," said Shmyr, "You can't take shifts off and that probably what I'll bring here, for sure."

  Jesse Gabrielle also returned to Brandon and practiced with the Wheat Kings Monday after helping Team West to a ninth-place finish at the tournament.

  Gabrielle had one goal and two points in five games at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  Shmyr and Gabrielle will both be available to return to the Brandon lineup Tuesday when the Wheat Kings host the Red Deer Rebels (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
