Wheat Kings Fall in Calgary

  The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out a four-game road trip with a 4-1 loss in Calgary on Thursday night.

  Elkhorn product Travis Sanheim had a goal and an assist for the Hitmen while Peter Quenneville scored the lone goal for Brandon.

  Sanheim’s power-play marker 5:31 into the first period gave the Hitmen a 1-0 lead that held up until the end of the first period.

  It was also the first of seven man advantages for Calgary and while the goal was the lone power-play goal the Wheat Kings would surrender, Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon felt their lack of discipline played a factor in the loss.

  “With that number of penalties, you overplay guys and you underplay guys, that’s how it works,” said McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “The Lisoway line, as a line, weren’t involved in the game at all which hurts our team, when we don’t play four lines.”

  Brandon also managed just 24 shots on goal including six in the third period and had their share of issues in trying to generate offensive momentum.

  “I just didn’t think we got inside of their defence enough to generate any scoring chances from where you need to get to,” said McCrimmon, “I didn’t think we ever played great.  I thought we were okay and we were in the game.”

  Curtis Honey stopped 31 of 34 shots in the Brandon net with the final Calgary goal going into an empty-net.

  The loss leaves Brandon with a 20-16-4-0 record through 40 games, good for fifth-place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference standings.

  The Wheat Kings return home to face the Regina Pats on Saturday night (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...Wheat Kings’ F Braylon Shmyr was held off the scoresheet in Team Pacific’s 4-1 win over Sweden Thursday at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.  Team Pacific finished first in Group A with a 3-1-0-0 record and will play Russia in one of Friday’s semifinals...Brandon F Jesse Gabrielle had an assist in Team West’s 4-1 loss to Quebec on Friday, his first point of the tournament.  Team West finished with one win in four round-robin games and will play Germany in Friday’s ninth-place game.
