Second Period Sinks Wheat Kings

John Quenneville scored twice in his return to
Brandon's lineup on Friday
A three-goal second period helped the Prince Albert Raiders to a 4-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

Brandon product Carson Perreaux notched his 13th goal of the season as part of the second period onslaught for Prince Albert, with his goal coming just eight seconds after Reid Gardiner had given the Raiders a 2-1 lead 2:02 into the middle frame.

John Quenneville scored twice for Brandon including a goal with 5.4 seconds left in the third period while Jens Meilleur had the other goal for the Wheat Kings.

"We had a really good first and third.  We played well, but we just didn't play good enough in the second," said Meilleur on CKLQ's post-game show, "We have to treat this game like a playoff series.  We have to forget about it and come back harder (Saturday)."

Brandon had opportunities to come back from the deficit late in the second and early in the third period when they were awarded three straight power-play chances.

However, the club was unable to capitalize and finished the night 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

"It could have helped us, for sure.  It wasn't a night where we didn't have looks or didn't have chances but we didn't have results," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "Your power-play performance should be measured partly by what it does for you when you're in key situations...tonight, in the third period, we had opportunities on the power-play to make this a one-goal game and we didn't do that."

The loss dropped the Wheat Kings a spot in the Eastern Conference standings, leaving them one point behind fifth-place Regina and just two points ahead of Prince Albert and Kootenay.

Brandon will host the Raiders again on Saturday night (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...former Wheat King Ryan Reaves signed a four-year, 4.5 million dollar contract extension with the St. Louis Blues on Friday.
