| Jayce Hawryluk broke his 12-game goalless drought Tuesday |
Three second period goals helped propel the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 4-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday.
The game was played in the early afternoon as part of the Oil Kings’ annual Hockey Hooky promotion with more than 11,000 in attendance including some 8,000 school-aged kids.
Jayce Hawryluk and Peter Quenneville scored the goals for the Wheat Kings, with Hawryluk’s first period power-play goal not only giving Brandon a 1-0 lead but also snapping a 12-game goalless streak for the Roblin product, his first goal since December 10th.
Edmonton countered with a Brett Pollock power-play goal at 9:29 of the second period followed by Riley Kieser’s go-ahead goal just 40 seconds later.
It was the Kieser goal in that sequence of events that really cost Brandon, according to Wheat Kings’ GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon.
“So it’s 1-1 which, in of itself, isn’t the end of the world. We gave up the next goal,” said McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “For me, of the goals we gave up today that hurt us, I thought getting scored on the shift immediately following the 1-1 goal, I thought that was really disappointing and I thought that really gave them momentum for the balance of the period.”
Mitchell Moroz gave Edmonton a two-goal lead in the final minute of the second period before Pollock’s second of the game 4:50 into the third period made it 4-1.
However, the two-goal outburst midway through the second period completely turned the complexion of the game and spoiled what was otherwise a decent road effort for the Wheat Kings.
“We had a real good first period, we outshot them 14-7, we scored, we had the lead so in terms of some of those things you do need to do, we did some real good things tonight,” said McCrimmon, “Unfortunately, we just had the lapses where they climbed back into the lead.”
Curtis Honey made 25 saves in his fourth straight start in goal for Brandon while Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots in the Edmonton net.
The victory was the Oil Kings sixth in a row and 12th in 13 games, giving them a three-point cushion over Calgary in the race for first-place in the Eastern Conference.
The loss for Brandon was just their second in regulation in their last nine games, but prevented the Wheat Kings from taking over sole possession of first-place in the WHL’s East Division.
Brandon still trailed the front-running Swift Current Broncos by a single point and get another chance to leapfrog past Swift Current on Wednesday when they visit the Red Deer Rebels (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
Chaff…Henrik Samuelsson had two assists Tuesday, giving the Edmonton forward eight goals and 17 points in eight career games against Brandon…Quenneville’s third period goal extended his point streak to five games while Ryan Pulock assisted on the goal to give him points in six straight games…F Tim McGauley’s five-game point streak ended on Tuesday.
