Jayce Hawryluk continued his hot streak but the Wheat Kings’ win streak ended on Sunday night as Brandon dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Swift Current Broncos.
Hawryluk scored twice including the game-tying goal with 2:39 left in the third period, giving him seven goals and 14 points in five games since returning from injury.
The tying goal came on a bank shot off Broncos’ netminder Eetu Laurikainen, with Hawryluk scoring from behind the end line after an initial shot from defenceman Ryan Pilon was stopped by Laurikainen.
“Jayce just threw it into his feet. When you’re a goaltender now that’s turned around and has to re-position yourself, that’s what can happen,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “This is all done with everything else going on around the goaltender to its one of those things you see every so often and it was a fortunate bounce for our team.”
While Hawryluk continued his hot streak, Brandon’s three-game winning streak ended with what was their ninth loss in the 13 games they’ve had deciding in overtime or a shootout so far this season.
“We’ve left a lot of points on the table,” said McCrimmon, “You don’t expect that you’re going to get the second point every time, but you don’t expect you’re going to shut out every time. That part of it has been disappointing.”

The Wheat Kings won their first three games in 2013-2014 that were deciding in overtime of a shootout but have now lost nine of their last ten that have gone to extra time including five in a row.
Tim McGauley also scored for the Wheat Kings, becoming the sixth Brandon player to score 20 or more goals this season.
The Wheat Kings and the Portland Winterhawks are the only two WHL teams to accomplish that feat so far this season.
Jordan Papirny made 36 saves in the Wheat Kings net, with Andrew Johnson scoring twice and Jay Merkley also scoring for Swift Current.
The loss leaves Brandon (31-26-6-3) four points behind the sixth-place Broncos in the WHL’s Eastern Conference and six points ahead of both Red Deer and Prince Albert, who are tied for eighth-place and the final playoff spot.
The Wheat Kings’ next game is Tuesday when they host the Calgary Hitmen (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
