The Brandon Wheat Kings saw their losing streak hit four games with a 3-2 loss in Prince Albert on Saturday night.
Calder Brooks and Leon Draisaitl scored goals 13 seconds apart late in the third period to lift the Raiders to their fourth straight win, tying them with Brandon and Red Deer for the final two playoffs spots in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.
The Wheat Kings and Raiders were tied 1-1 heading into the third period, but Brandon generated just six shots and scored their second goal with 19 seconds left in the final frame after Prince Albert had taken the 3-1 lead with just over four minutes left.
“The next step for us to win, we need a little more urgency, a little more push. Right now, we’re just on the teeter of going either way,” said Brandon assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Never felt like we could ever get a cycle going. We also needed to find more shots to the net and I thought we didn’t create enough shots to the net where you create second chances, and if we did, we never had anyone around the net for the second shot.”
Rihards Bukarts scored both goals for the Wheat Kings while Jordan Papirny made 34 saves in the Wheat Kings’ net including 16 in the first period.
“In the first, I thought they had a lot of pressure. (Papirny) made some big, big saves for us, and that’s what we want,” said Ritchie, “We want those guys, him and Curtis, to give us an opportunity every game. I thought Jordan did give us an opportunity, it’s just offensively, we need to do a better job.”
The Wheat Kings, Raiders and Red Deer are now all tied with 71 points apiece heading into the final week of the regular season though Prince Albert does have a game in hand.

Brandon will finish the regular season by hosting Saskatoon Tuesday and then playing a home-and-home series with Regina on Friday and Saturday.
