Overtime continues to be very unkind for the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Former Wheat Kings Taylor Cooper scored 20 seconds into extra time as the Lethbridge Hurricanes downed Brandon 3-2 on Wednesday night, leaving the Wheat Kings with just two wins in eight games decided in overtime this season.
Quintin Lisoway sent the game into overtime by scoring his seventh goal of the season With 4:16 left in the third period.
“We didn’t give up a lot in the way of chances, which is something that we talked about,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “They had six shots in the first, six shots in the second so we hadn’t given a lot up. The third was a little more open, both ways, and it was a pretty evenly played game.”
A Richard Nejezchleb power-play goal late in the first period gave Brandon a 1-0 lead, a lead that held up until the Hurricanes tied it on Riley Sheen’s goal 8:40 into the third period.
Brady Ramsay then gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead 3:03 later.
“We had stretches in the game tonight where we just didn’t shoot the puck,” added McCrimmon, “We had some great looks, particularly in the second period where we missed some wide open nets on what would have been, you would think, pretty easy goals for our team. So, some of those things bit us a little bit as well.”
Jordan Papirny stopped 23 shots in the Brandon net while Teagan Sacher made 25 saves for Lethbridge.
The Wheat Kings do earn a single point, and are now tied with Regina for second-place in the East Division, one point behind first-place Swift Current.
Brandon returns home to face the Kootenay Ice on Friday and Saturday (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
