Wheat Kings Blanked in Speedy Creek

Curtis Honey makes one of his 32 saves in Sunday night.

The Brandon Wheat Kings were shut out for the first time this season, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Swift Current Broncos on Sunday night.

Eetu Laurikainen recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the Swift Current net while Brycen Martin scored a pair of goals for the Broncos, who scored all three of their goals in the second period.

Brandon generated just 24 shots on goal in the contest while going 0-for-8 on the power-play.

“I thought it was just an extension of our game.  I don’t think we paid a price to win at all in tonight’s game,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Those same ten guys that we praise on nights when our power-play is good should be looking in the mirror tonight because our power-play was very poor, to the point where it spilled over and affected our game.”

Not only were the Wheat Kings unable to score with the man advantage, they also surrendered a shorthanded goal.

That goal by Swift Current’s Nathan Burns 1:47 into the middle frame opened the scoring and proved to be the game-winning goal for the Broncos.

It’s the second time in a week that the Wheat Kings have struggled to generate offence in a game, a rare occurance for a team that is currently fourth in the WHL, averaging 3.8 goals per game.

“There’s times in the game when there’s two teams and one puck,” added McCrimmon, “You can talk systems to death, and structure and different types of things that you incorporate into your team play but there comes a time when you have to win some battles, and I thought we were limp with that part of it.”

Curtis Honey stopped 32 shots in the Wheat Kings’ net.

The loss drops Brandon (28-21-5-1) two points behind Swift Current in the race for first-place in the East Division, with the Wheat Kings having two games in hand.

Brandon continues their road trip Tuesday night when they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
