John Quenneville is expected to return to Brandon's lineup Friday after a six-game absence |
The Brandon Wheat Kings are expected to get one of their key players back on Friday night when they entertain the Swift Current Broncos (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
John Quenneville has missed the last six games with an upper body injury but practiced without restrictions on Thursday, skating on a regular line with Jayce Hawryluk and Jesse Gabrielle.
“It’s been a long time coming, I’ve really missed the game and I just want to play,” said Quenneville on Thursday, “My injury is 100 per cent now, and my game is back to where it was before I got hurt so I feel good.”
Quenneville was leading the Wheat Kings in scoring when he was injured back on January 22, scoring 21 goals and 45 points in 46 games.
Friday’s game is a first-place showdown, with Brandon and Swift Current tied atop the East Division and meeting twice in the next three days.
The Wheat Kings are 2-2-1-0 in five matchups with the Broncos so far this season but have just one win in three home games versus Swift Current.
“We’re best against them when we get pucks on goal and really give their goaltender a tough time,” said Quenneville, “I think if we do that Friday night, I think we’ll be fine.”
The Wheat Kings are coming off a 3-2 home-ice loss to Medicine Hat on Wednesday night, which was Brandon’s fifth loss in their last seven games.
“(Wednesday), we had a really good chance to get ahead in the standings and we played a pretty bad game out there,” added centre Tim McGauley, “We just have to make sure we come to the rink, play 100 per cent, put all our effort into the game and I think we’ll be fine.”
20-year old defenceman Rene Hunter also practiced on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s loss to Medicine Hat.
