Jaedon Descheneau had a goal and three assists for the Ice, who jumped out to a 4-2 first period lead and then completed the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
"I feel like we gave up too many shots to Kootenay," said Brandon defenceman Colton Waltz when discussing the first period on CKLQ's post-game show, "They have high offensive talent up front. We gave up too many shots, 21 against, and the different in the game was a power-play goal against and they also managed to get a shorthanded one on us and that, ultimately, was a margin we couldn't make up."
Ryan Pulock and Jens Meilleur scored the goals for the Wheat Kings, who played with four of the top seven scorers in Jayce Hawryluk, John Quenneville, Richard Nejezchleb and Rihards Bukarts.
20-year old defenceman Rene Hunter also missed the game because of an upper body injury.
There were no additions to the Brandon lineup, meaning the Wheat Kings dressed ten forwards and six defencemen for the contest.
"I know guys worked hard all night. I don't think the loss had anything to do with lack of effort. We had effort all night from all the guys in the lineup," added Waltz, "I know there are some situations when you do want to conserve energy, just being shortstaffed. It was just a situation where we got down two goals, and we got that extra push in the last two periods."
Curtis Honey started and allowed all four first period goals before being replaced by rookie Jordan Papirny, who stopped all 22 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes.
MacKenzie Skapski stopped 28 shots in the Kootenay net.
Brandon (28-23-6-2) is now seventh in the Eastern Conference and third in the East Division.
However, the Wheat Kings remain just two points behind Swift Current and Regina, who are tied for top spot in the East Division.
The Broncos edged the Pats 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday night.
Brandon will visit Regina on Monday afternoon (1:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
Chaff...the Westman products on the Kootenay blueline had a good night, with Virden product Landon Peel had two assists and was +1 on Saturday while Brandon product Landon Cross had one assist and was +2...Kootenay's Sam Reinhart extended his point streak to 17 games with a goal and an assist.
