Quenneville Looking for Offensive Leap

  John Quenneville is aiming to take a big leap forward in his second season with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

  Quenneville notched eight goals and 19 points in 47 games during his rookie season on a team that averaged just 2.6 goals per game in 2012-2013.

  "I've always been an offensive player, and I think my second year in the league is a good chance for me to step up and really help the team in that aspect," said Quenneville earlier this week, "I'm more comfortable with everything now and I'm ready to really contribute as a Brandon Wheat King."

  The 6-foot-1, 186 pound Quenneville is one of several second-year players the Wheat Kings expect, and need, to dramatically improve their offensive production in order to improve their goal total from the 186 the team scored a year ago.

  The Edmonton, Alberta product knows it'll be a team effort as well.

  "I think it's all team.  We have to go to the net, we have to have more pace to our game," said Quenneville, "The more pace we have to our game, the more chances we're going to get in the offensive zone.  We have a lot of good offensive players and we're going to score goals."

  For Quenneville himself, part of the commitment to becoming more of an offensive force was improving his conditioning.

  The 17-year old was tops on the team in VO2 and Aerobic Power testing prior to training camp this year.

  "I really worked hard in the off-season, and cardio was one thing I really focused on a lot and the hard work paid off," said Quenenville, who also appears stronger than he did a year ago, "I think with strength, it's also just confidence in my game.  I'm just stronger out there and more assertive in my plays."

  Quenneville notched an assist in his pre-season debut Sunday in Moose Jaw.

  The Wheat Kings resume their pre-season schedule by hosting the Regina Pats on Friday (7:30 p.m, Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...former Wheat King Tyler Yaworski has signed with the Central Hockey League's Quad City Mallards.  The 21-year old is also scheduled to go to camp with the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild...the Calgary Hitmen shipped D Peter Kosterman, 20, to the Prince George Cougars Wednesday in exchange for a fourth round pick in 2014 and a sixth round selection in 2015.
